'Among the coral reefs in Australia there are certain fish which change their sex on demand. If there are not enough female fish, then some males change into females. If there are not enough male fish then some females change into males. The fish of changed sex are fully functional in their new role.'
'After mating the female house spider wraps its mate in a cocoon made from its web material and then proceeds to eat its mate at leisure.'
'While the male praying mantis is in the process of making love the female nonchalantly starts to eat him from the head down.'
'When two prarie voles of opposite sex meet, they make love for forty hours. Then they are chemically locked to each other forever in a sort of mutual obsession.'
'A genetecist in Australia has claimed that 'intelligence' is linked to the X chromosome. This means that intelligence in boys always comes from the mother. Girls get an X chromosome each from both the father and mother. '
'There is a part of Indonesia where women buy husbands. If you fancy a man, you go along to the family and make an offer. If the offer is accepted, you pay the money and have yourself a husband. In that region only women can own property.'
And finally, we come to...
'In India, there is a custom that when a daughter gets married, the family has to provide the groom with dowry or promise money. If a family has many daughters, they can be ruined. That maybe why 90% of illegal abortions are on girl babies. Yet in other cultures, the groom has to pay the family of the bride in order to marry her. In South Africa, the bride price is the imbola. One highly educated young woman had diffiulty getting married because any prospective groom would have had to pay two hundred head of cattle. In the Middle East, a good bride might cost $30,000. So it is usually cheaper to marry a western woman who costs nothing at all.'

hehe..nie one..but in kerala, it's women who were given priority...women were allowed to have as many husbands as they wanted..not husbands exactly because they weren't married. just that men could come and spend the night alone. it's a long story..and it was called sammandam..i'll tell u bout it later. its highly interesting
did u know that under muslim law, the groom has to pay consideration to the bride for the marriage which is known as "dower"!!
and as divya says, in kerala there was a system called Marumakkathayam System which simply was a matriarchal system!! don't know about spending the night and all though :) may be divya will shed some more light on that :p
nice work.....wish it were longer....but i'd really like this sammandam thingy to be revied...lol seems like such an interesting concept
hehe very interesting pieces of information
lol. nice read. wonder what got you started on researching for this one :)
hmmm...
Div: you must tell me about as soon as u can! it sounds damn interesting...
Mukund: Hmmmm... 'dower' you say?
dante: I know!
Laksh: The look on the mami's face would be PRICELESS!!! ;-)
Aytida: thanks.... :-)
Sthupit girl: Well.. If u must know... I wanted to post something with 'sex' in the title! lol... No... it was really me wanting an interesting read to post... :-)
Good that fish thing is not possible in humans...imagine filling some forms as female and some as male...names keep changing...boy! this world wud have been full of confusion...lol
reminds me of a topic for my blog...thanks :)
yup, its dower and not dowry :)
Kerala is matriarchal only in NAME. The state of women in Kerala is no better than the rest of India.
kerala used to be matriachal in system...i dont think it's that way anymore..not legally atleast. marimakkathayam and this sammandam concept was abolished a while ago..now they're as opressed as women in any other state.
megha,
if u notice, i used the word "was"! that system has long since been abolished!
divya,
after enticing us with some interesting things, now u say its been abolished! verrrrry bad :p
Hi
"This means that intelligence in boys always comes from the mother."
Interesting! Keep researching!
"While the male praying mantis is in the process of making love the female nonchalantly starts to eat him from the head down."
And all the while the male mantis is thinking the female is into weird stuff and suddenly he realises he's being eaten up, for real!
Now thats very disturbing.
some of the male change into female? now THAT would have been useful at loyola.
actually i think with some amphibian DNA it works the other way round, female into male... my source = jurassic park!
cool post :)
@mukund
what to do..my ancestors i presume had a jolly good time with a lot of women...happy times. but now, no such happiness exists. i'll give u some more gory details of this system..mybe when i meet you in person or something. because i simply cant bother to type it out
hey, i knew that balck widow spiders ate their male partners. not the house spiders. anyway, the dowry system i think is not so prevalent in southern india as it is popular in northern and eastern india. but i don't have enough knowledge on the demographical perspective of dowry. and moslem people do pay dowry. but the groom pays it.
Wow..that was a good post, and some wonderful comments!!
nice post!
and ya there exists in kerala a custom called sambandam where the women are allowed to keep sexual relations with as many men as they please!
in Flunkasia, women & men and men & women are men & women and women & men.
but Fl was destroyed when it was only 6/7 years old. iv heard say that Flunkasias are being created and and destroyed by the second.. once destroyed, lost forever.
